Hip Pain
How hip joint works?
Hip joint is the weight bearing joint in our body. It helps us in every activity including walking, running, sitting and turning. It is formed by complex network of bones, cartilage, ligaments tendons and muscles.
Any disease or injury can damage your hip joint. It could damage your bone, cartilage ligament, tendon or muscle causing pain and disability. The common causes of hip pain are osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, avascular necrosis, infection and trauma.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease where cartilage of the hip joint is damaged.
Cartilage is a smooth covering at the ends of bones forming hip joint. It provides smooth surface for frictionless gliding of bones. When cartilage is broken or worn out the two ends of bone grinds against each other producing sound and pain. One can feel this grinding of bones during walking, sitting or any other activity involving movement of the thigh bone.
There are various reasons for the development of osteoarthritis like previous injury, ageing, obesity, family history etc.
Proper diagnosis and treatment at an early stage can prevent the progression of disease and its symptoms.
Avascular Necrosis
In this blood supply of the head of femur (globular upper end of thigh bone) is hampered either due to some trauma or disease. Head of femur starts dying, its cartilage and bony part become irregular in shape leading to pain and disability.
Fractures
In older age group, chances of getting a hip fracture even with a trivial trauma are high. Slip and fall accounts for 80-90% of all hip fractures. Any hip pain, even after a trivial trauma should not be neglected. One must consult the doctor for immediate and adequate treatment.
Osteoporosis
With advance age the bone forming capacity of our body declines leading to reduced bone density or a porous bone. This condition of porous bone is known as osteoporosis. In patients with osteoporosis chances of getting fracture even after a trivial trauma is high. Age, gender (women), family history and sedentary life style are some of the factors causing osteoporosis. With the better understanding of the disease pathology osteoporosis can now be treated.
