Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction Surgery
A joint inside the body is formed by joining two bones together. A ligament is a rope-like structure that helps in this process. Thus, ligaments provide stability to the joint. Inside the knee joint, four main ligaments connect the thigh and leg bones. Two of these ligaments are inside the knee joint, known as the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments. The other two ligaments, the lateral and medial collateral ligaments, are present on the sides of the knee joint, which provides sideways stability to the knee joint.
The anterior Cruciate ligament connects to the thigh bone above and below the leg bone. This ligament prevents anterior translation or subluxation of the leg bone. A person whose anterior cruciate ligament is torn or absent frequently has his knee joint buckled or give way.
Anyone playing sports like football, basketball, or cricket is prone to this injury. Immediately after the injury, the patient develops pain and swelling, and walking becomes difficult. Some patients may feel instability or give way in their knee joints. Their knees may get locked due to a concomitant meniscus injury.
Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction Surgery involves replacing torn ligament with a tendon graft. This is a day care procedure, where patients get discharged from the hospital on the same day. Mobilization starts immediately and patient can bear weight on the operated limb with some brace and walking support.
At My Ortho Centre we provide comprehensive management of ACL injury and its associated knee injuries. We take care of operative, physiotherapy and rehabilitative part of the procedure as per the international norms. We help you and put every effort to make your operative journey comfortable and successful. Our doctor performs all Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction Surgery(s) with the best expertise and postoperative results. Our motive is to enable our sportspersons to perform their sports activities without discomfort or disability. Our centre provides state-of-the-art physio and rehabilitation facilities and psychological guidance to all our patients seeking an early return to sports activities.
Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction Surgery is required in physically active patients. After reconstruction, normal knee kinematics are restored, allowing patients to perform sports and other physical activities.
This Arthroscopic ACL reconstruction Surgery involves replacing or repairing the torn ligament with a tendon or artificial graft. This is a daycare procedure, and patients are discharged on the same day of surgery. After surgery, mobilization starts immediately. The patient can bear weight on the operated limb with a brace and walking support.
Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction Surgery has many types:
- Arthroscopic ACL reconstruction Surgery Repair with or without Augmentation
- Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction Surgery using BPBT graft/ Peroneus Graft
- Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction Surgery using Hamstring Graft.
- Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction Surgery with Internal Bracing or Augmentation.
- Double Bundle ACL Reconstruction.
- All Inside ACL Reconstruction
- ACL Reconstruction using Artificial Graft
Which surgery is suitable for a particular patient depends upon many factors, some of them are:
- Duration of injury
- Type of injury
- Patient morphology
- Patient activity level
- Surgeon preferences.

Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction Surgery : FAQ
ACL arthroscopic surgery is less invasive surgery. In this damaged anterior cruciate ligament is repaired or reconstructed using minimal invasive arthroscopic approach. ACL arthroscopic surgery allows early recovery of patient, compared to conventional open surgical approach.
Patients usually start walking within a day or two after ACL surgery. Initially for a few days brace support is required, later one can walk without support. After approximately 2 weeks, walking can be started without support or crutches. Your recovery becomes early with the help of a proper rehabilitation programme and exercises guided by the physiotherapist.
If not repaired acute ACL injury may turn into chronic ACL deficiency. The ACL deficient knee may become unstable which may further damage other tissues inside the knee joint like cartilage and meniscus and later it can lead to osteoarthritis of knee joint.
ACL reconstruction is a day care surgery. Hospital stay required is one day at the most. After surgery exercises are started under the guidance of a physiotherapist and or as instructed by your surgeon to prevent stiffness in your knee.
Success rate of ACL surgery is 95% and it is safe surgery.
The procedure usually takes less than 2 hours.
The ACL cannot heal on its own because there is no blood supply to this ligament. Surgery is usually required for athletes because the ACL is needed in order to safely perform the sharp movements that are required in sports.
Nutrition and Diet Before ACL Surgery
We may suggest that you: Limit or stop using things such as caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol in the weeks leading to surgery. Take certain nutritional supplements — such as multivitamins, vitamin C, and zinc — before surgery. These help promote wound healing during post-op recovery.

You can effectively start walking immediately after ACL surgery. Take as much weight as you feel is comfortable! Begin walking with 2 crutches, progress to 1 crutch and without crutches after about 1 to 2 weeks. Try to walk normally just like you did prior to your knee injury.
ACL Surgery is a pinhole minimally invasive surgery. At our center, ACL Operation is done as a daycare procedure, and the patient is discharged from the hospital the same day.
First, the patient’s limb is anesthetized, which means the patient feels no pain during and even a few hours after the surgery.
Then, the surgeon inserts a small camera into the knee through a tiny incision. Another similar small incision is made to pass on the naturally prepared tendon graft or artificial graft inside the knee. This graft or tendon is then fixed with different implants ( bioscrews and buttons) to secure it in one place.
After this, the minor cuts are closed with one single stitch or dressing.
Early mobilization is allowed, and the patient can go back home.
ACL surgery cost depends upon many factors, like
Age and duration of injury
Hospital & room category
Implants and techniques used
Associated injuries and comorbidities
Roughly, arthroscopic ACL surgery cost varies from 45k to 90k
After the invention of the arthroscope and the revolution in the technique of ACL surgery, ACL surgery is almost complication-free and safe. After ACL surgery, one can go back to sports and vigorous activities.
After ACL surgery, the patient usually gets the graft, which is stronger than the native ACL. Someone can also tear this new graft, but with a greater force than required to tear the original or native ACL.
